Seaplane pilots in the Northeast will soon gather in Hammondsport, New York for the Wings & Wheels event on Sept. 16th & 17th, 2017.
John Staber recently sent us the following information about an upcoming fly-in event in Hammondsport, New York on September 16th & 17th, 2017.
Since 2003, the Glenn H. Curtiss Museum and many very dedicated volunteers have held the “Seaplane Homecoming” each fall on Keuka Lake, right where Curtiss made some of his greatest contributions to aviation. In the early 1900’s it took bravery, ingenuity and cunning to do what he did and every aviation enthusiast owes him a debt of gratitude.
This year is no exception. Thanks to the generosity of the owner/pilots, a wide variety of Seaplanes will gather at Depot Park. You will have a chance to get up close to the aircraft and talk to the proud owners. You’ll learn a great deal about why water flying is so satisfying and exciting. It’s a very unique way to experience the freedom that being a pilot provides and they love to talk about it.
Seaplanes will be parked at Depot Park in Hammondsport at the head of Keuka Lake. Show cars will be parked along Shethar St. and on Park Place adjacent to the Village Square. All are within a short, easy walk.
All show car entrants and seaplanes are required to pre-register prior to arriving at the event. There is no donation required for Seaplanes. Show car entrants are required to make a $15 donation to the Museum at the time of registration. The owner of either a registered seaplane or show car will receive a welcome package containing a “windshield card” and several other valuable items. Each arriving seaplane pilot and 1 co-pilot will also receive complimentary tickets to the event banquet taking place on Saturday night at the Curtiss Museum.
The sponsor hotel is the beautiful new Best Western Plus in Hammondsport. There are other local hotels and B&B’s available as well. A listing of accommodations can be found at the Hammondsport Chamber Web Site.
Food & Beverage
There are numerous, excellent restaurants and an historic watering hole called Maloney’s in the Village of Hammondsport. There will be food vendors at Depot Park and on the Village Square as well. You will have no shortage of choices when you get hungry.
Banquet Dinner Saturday Night
All are encouraged to stay and enjoy the wonderful banquet dinner at the Curtiss Museum. You will sit and mingle among the exhibits. There will be complimentary beer and wine available at 6:00 and the fabulous 4-course dinner is at 7:00. Announcements, awards and a silent auction will be at 8:00. There will be numerous historic and interesting items up for auction with all proceeds going directly to the Curtiss Museum. The cost to attend is only $50 per person and it is open to the public. Remember, arriving Seaplane Pilots and 1 co-pilot are invited to attend the banquet at no cost. You can register the banquest and view the banquet menu by clicking the button below.
Free Shuttle Service
There will be a free shuttle service running from 10:00AM – 4:00PM on Saturday and Sunday. It will operate in a loop with stops at Depot Park, where the Seaplane activity will be.
The Village Square in the center of the village of Hammondsport, where the car show activity will be centered at the Hammondsport Central School, for overflow parking at the Glenn H. Curtiss Museum, for over flow parking and museum visits at the Best Western Plus, for guests and hotel tours the loop will take 10-15 minutes. Thank you to the ARC of Steuben County for their generous support.
Activities For Kids
There will be lots to do for kids of all ages so plan to bring them! The Seaplane activity at Depot Park is always a favorite for kids. This will be on going Saturday and Sunday. The car show will feature unique and interesting cars that always captivate the young ones too. There will be a trophy given out each day during the car show for that day’s “Kids Choice Award” so while you’re looking at and deciding on which cars to vote for (more info on awards below) your self, your children will do the same. We want their involvement and votes each day at the car show. There will also be a “Kid Zone” at the museum tent in Depot Park with specific activities geared toward kids. Then of course there is the Museum, which you’re encouraged to visit while you’re here. Leave your car where it is and take the shuttle!
Car Show Awards
Unique trophies will be awarded on both Saturday and Sunday afternoons at 3:30 in the Village Square. Unlike some car shows where the judges are experts who critique ever inch of your car from top to bottom, the judges at Wings & Wheels in Hammondsport are the audience members. Those who choose to participate (and all will be encouraged) will be provided with a ballot where they will vote for their favorites in the categories each award will be given. Those votes will be tallied and awards given on each day. The award categories are:
Classic Car – 1st, 2nd, 3rd Place
Exotic Car – 1st, 2nd, 3rd Place
Best of Show
Kids Choice Award
Each day there will be a separate vote, tally and set of awards given so in effect during this one 2 day show, there are 2 contests. If you are a car show entrant we encourage you to register for and participate on both days. Stay the night. Enjoy the village and the lake and all the fun the event provides and join us at the Saturday night banquet at the Curtiss Museum! If you are a spectator, the same goes for you. We will have numerous cars that come for just one day so it will be like 2 car shows in one 2 day event.
Seaplane rides will be available (for a fee) at Depot Park starting Friday afternoon and will go through Saturday and Sunday. Rides will be provided by Finger Lakes Seaplanes, LLC., based in Pulteney, NY. They will be approximately 30 minutes in duration and will be on and around Keuka Lake. Rides will be available on a first come, first served basis and are of course, weather permitting. Please keep in mind that wind and water surface state are included in “Weather”. The professional team at Finger Lakes Seaplanes, LLC will decide on their ability to operate given the conditions. Their aircraft can accommodate 3 passengers plus the pilot. Groups of 2 may be asked to separate across 2 rides so the aircraft is always able to fly with those 3 seats occupied.
