Donated Boeing 727 Jet Aircraft Transformed Into Interactive Exhibit at Aerospace Center for Excellence.
The unveiling will take place this week of the Piedmont Aerospace Experience Exhibit, a fully functioning Boeing 727 jet aircraft donated by FedEx is now a learning exhibit, the only one of its kind in the world on a high school campus! This event will take place after the annual SUN ‘n FUN Mayor’s Breakfast on Tuesday, March 8, 2016. A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held at 9:00 a.m., then the media is invited to stay for a tour and interviews with staff, students and volunteers.
The SUN ‘n FUN Convention Campus is located at 4175 Medulla Rd., Lakeland. A large crowd is expected (250+) for the Mayor’s Breakfast so you will need to park east of the Central Florida Aerospace Academy (CFAA), which will put you in close proximity to the 727.
The aircraft serves as an extension of the classroom for CFAA on school days and is available for other groups by appointment. The back of the aircraft holds a small conference room with a truly unique table created from a donated aircraft wing! You don’t want to miss experiencing this unique environment.
When class is in session, students watch on closed-circuit interactive tablets as their supervised peers in the cockpit start the aircraft and operate its systems. Cameras are positioned so students may observe the control surfaces and other systems as they are cycled, providing a unique and ground-breaking learning environment.

Not even in a commercial airline pilot ground school do you have this much interaction with a live airplane,” -Robb Williams, Executive Director, Aerospace Center for Excellence.[/pullquote]
Affectionately named Paul, Piedmont Aerospace Experience has the ability to positively impact thousands of future pilots, mechanics, engineers, and aerospace professionals.
Piedmont Aerospace Experience is four years in the making and was made possible by community partners at the City of Lakeland, Lakeland Linder Regional Airport, Florida Modification Specialists, Polk State College, Central Florida Aerospace Academy, and Traviss Career Center. In addition, donations from the Tom Davis and Emil Buehler Foundations, as well as a local anonymous donor, made this one of a kind learning experience possible.
