On December 16, 2017 at the 24th annual World Travel Awards ceremony, Trans Maldivian Airways (TMA) was officially named the world’s leading seaplane operator for 2017.

The title was handed out at the red carpet awards ceremony that took place at the JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay in Vietnam.

This isn’t the first time that TMA has brought home this award. They were named the world’s leading seaplane operator back in 2014 and 2015 as well.

The company we now know as TMA was originally started back in 1989 as Hummingbird Island Helicopters, and only flew helicopters. In 1997 the first seaplane was added and the name changed to Hummingbird Island Airways. Two years later in 1999 the fleet was composed entirely of seaplanes and in 2000 the name changed what we now call it, Trans Maldivian Airways.

TMA currently has an all-amphibian fleet of 49 aircraft, comprised mostly of DHC-6-300s, and has regularly scheduled flights all around the Maldivian archipelago. In 2016, TMA operated over 120,000 flights with close to one million passengers. Just last Saturday the company sold for $550 Million to the Investment firm Bain Capital.

The World Travel Awards are known as the Oscars of the travel industry and are globally recognized as the ultimate show of quality. To win an award from this organization shows that you are in the elite when it comes to travel.
